Mountainboarding

Mountainboarding is one of the fastest growing extreme sports….combining the carving and freestyle of snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing with the trailriding of downhill mountainbikers. Mountainboarders come down the gnarly stuff at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour, on a pimped up skateboard..fatter tyres, suspension and sometimes even brakes. Body armour and a lid are not for show…this can be a contact sport (with hard ground) and then there are the ramps, kickers and halfpipes of freestyle riding as well. The sport was developed, unsurprisingly, by skaters, snowboarders and surfers who wanted to keep riding when the roads/snow/water weren’t up to scratch, and there have been competitions in the UK since 1997. Less cliquey than skating, it gives the opportunity to head into the wide open spaces…you can ride one literally anywhere….and there are loads of centres to get started…see www.atbauk.org To see the pros pushing the limits check out Court Farm in Hereford August 26th/27th  Coastal at Burton Bradstock in Dorset September 2nd/3rd (see the ATBA website for details) or the White Air Festival in October www,whiteair.co.uk
